Hoppers – insects not frogs!

leafhopper IMG_7673©Maria de BruynMuch of the insect world consists of animals that we usually don’t even see or notice because: a) we don’t know they exist and therefore don’t look for them and b) they are tiny and only well visible with an enlarging lens. But once you get a good look at them, they turn out to be fascinating and sometimes quite attractive. One group of these insects is the hoppers – leaf- and planthoppers, that is, like the gray lawn leafhopper (Exitianus exitiosus) to the left.

As their name indicates, leaf- and planthoppers jump to get around, but they also move by flying, scuttling sideways like crabs, or walking slowly or quickly along plant stems and leaves. Both juveniles and adults are very aware of what is around them and if you do manage to spot one, you’ll see that they are watching you and, for example, may move underneath a leaf to get away from you.This broad-headed sharpshooter (Oncometopia orbona) stayed still for a moment.

Acanaloid hopper nymph IMG_8738©Maria de BruynLeafhoppers are only 1/16 to 5/8 of an inch (2-15 mm) long. About 20,000 different leafhoppers have been described around the world; they feed by sucking plant sap from grass, shrubs, or trees. Planthoppers, some of which look like leaves and may be a bit bigger, also feed on plants.The nymphs (juveniles) are tiny, too, as seen in this photo where you see my fingertip above the nymph of an Acanaloid planthopper .

Leafhoppers, such as the speckled sharpshooter (Paraulacizes irrorata) below generally have wide, flattened and pointy heads with large eyes.

Planthoppers come in different forms and, in tropical countries, some of them are quite unique. While many keep their wings flat against their bodies, the derbid planthopper (Mysidia mississippiensis) looks like Derbid planthopper IMG_0717©Maria de Bruyn (2)a delicate little fly while resting.

Leafhoppers’ hind legs are covered with hairs that help them spread a secretion over their body which is water repellant. Some planthopper nymphs’ back legs have gears that help them jump away in the blink of an eye.

The female broad- headed sharpshooter (Oncometopia orbona) develops white spots on her wings, which are egg brochosomes; these indicate she is ready to oviposit (lay eggs). These spots are made of a white waxy secretion that she places there; they dry to look like “chalky” spots. After she inserts her eggs into a plant, she uses her hind legs to scrape off the brochosomes onto the oviposition site as a way of hiding the eggs from predators.

 

Leaf- and planthopper nymphs can look as if they are completely different insects from the adult forms. As they mature, they begin to look similar to adults but are often of a different color and don’t yet have full wings. Below you see the colorful adult glassy-winged sharpshooter (Homalodisca vitripennis) and below that some nymphs of this leafhopper.

As juveniles, hoppers go through a process called ecdysis. They pass through several stages to reach adulthood, molting and leaving behind their old exoskeleton in order to grow. They are called instars during these stages.

Some of the nymphs, with their striped faces and big eyes, look to me as if they’d be great models for cartoon characters or Halloween masks like these coppery leafhopper juveniles (Coelidia olitoria).

Acanaloniid planthopper nymph Acanalonia bivittata IMG_8201©Maria de BruynresPlanthopper nymphs, like the two-striped planthopper (Acanalonia bivittata) and the Acanalonia servillei below, are known for producing waxy strands from their bodies which repel water. These strands also help protect them from predators, who might grab onto the showy white hairs, which break off so that the hopper can escape. The nymphs can ultimately be entirely covered in white wax.

The colors and patterns on the adults can be quite beautiful, especially on the leafhoppers in the area where I live. The planthoppers tend to be white, gray or green. The colors on the coppery leafhopper are wonderful and varied.

As tiny as these insects are, they can be parasitized and play host to even smaller insects. This flatid planthopper (Ormenoides venusta), for example, was carrying red mites that weren’t harming it but hitching a ride. It must be annoying though.

Maybe one day I will get a macro lens so that I can really get some good photos of these cute little insects. In the meantime, as there are several thousand species in North America, I can look forward to finding new ones – with my camera in hand as I wouldn’t be able to see anything but specks on plants without it!

A blended bird family!

Mallard-pekin duck IMG_0922©Maria de Bruyn resA mixed-parentage duck at one of our local ponds lost a companion recently, leaving him sad and bereft. A fellow wildlife photographer mentioned that this bird, who I am calling Harry, is the offspring of a mallard and a pekin duck (Anas platyrhynchos x Anas platyrhynchos domestica). Harry stayed by the body of the duck who died for a while, clearly distressed.

Another pond resident is a female Canada goose (Branta canadCanada goose IMG_0563©Maria de Bruyn resensis), who I have named Clara; she is currently raising four goslings. Canada geese are monogamous and the fathers help raise the young, but Clara appears to be a single mom. At least, she doesn’t have a male goose partner.

However, Clara is not alone. It appears that Harry has attached himself to the goose family, keeping close to them in the water and on land. He swims with them and follows them onshore when Mama leads the brood to vegetation to feed for a while.

Whereas Canada geese that are not habituated to humans will threaCanada goose IMG_0865©Maria de Bruyn resten and even attack people who come too close to their babies, they become pretty mellow when they are often around humans who have shown they will not harm them. Mama kept an eye on all the people taking a stroll around the pond, but she simply shepherded the goslings aside when a person came too close. Harry also kept an eye on the people wandering about.

Goslings are able to feed themselves as soon as they are hatched. They will eat grasses and sedge and also grain if it is available.

They follow Clara’s eCanada goose IMG_4483©Maria de Bruyn resxample when foraging in water, tipping forward and extending their necks and heads underwater to scoop up vegetation and even the occasional fish.

The goslings can walk and swim right after birth and manage to run, flapping their stubby wings to keep balanced.

On 21 May, some other Canada geese flew overhead and one pair descended to the pond. Harry flew over to meet them, quacking a greeting, and led them back to Clara and the brood where they kept the blended family company for a time.

On 27 May, I saw Clara and children foraging at the pond with the two visitor geese but Harry was nowhere in sight. I feared that something had happened to him.

Later, when I visited in the early morning, Clara and the kids were resting and then foraging while a great blue heron (Ardea herodias) fished nearby; Harry was nowhere to be seen. I felt a twinge of sadness.

My feelings were unfounded, however. As Clara and brood swam toward the other end of the pond and I accompanied them walking along the shore, I suddenly saw a brown-headed duck with twin curls by his tail swimming near shore. As Clara came into sight with the four babies swimming in line behind her, Harry began quacking and quacking as he watched them approach.

They were obviously both quite pleased to have each other’s company again. I hope this blended bird family continues to enjoy their inter-species companionship throughout the summer!

 

 

Casey Crow adopts a home

For example, this past spring when it was snowing, a few came to eat fruit but they never really hung around – except for one that flew in with a half-eaten squirrel (or rabbit) that it was reluctant to leave behind.American crow IMG_9437© Maria de Bruyn res

 

 
Now, however, it seems that the one of these fine-feathered friends has decided to adopt my residence as a temporary home – or at least as a spot for some occasional R & R.

Since I don’t know if this crow is female or male, I’ve named “it” Casey, a nice gender-neutral name. Casey is quite large and has grown bolder as time progresses. At first, Casey would alight on a branch and observe for quite a while before venturing toward a feeder; if I appeared, Casey would leave.

Now Casey flies in to perch on the roof, a nearby tree or a feeder not far from the back door, balancing as well as possible. S/he often announces his/her arrival with a few loud caws and sometimes what seems to be irritation when grackles decide to carry out a little harassment.

American crow IMG_8668©Maria de Bruyn resOne of my old plastic seed feeders broke, leaving only a bit of skeletal structure. Rather than toss it out, however, I’ve recycled it to become a grape jelly holder. No orioles have visited but it appears that grape jelly has become quite the treat for Casey, who balances in odd and sometimes contorted ways to be able to snag some.

Casey is much too large to balance at other feeders but has obviously been searching for some additional food. A short while ago, I learned that Casey can be quite fond of apples.

Casey is quite the handsome bird and sometimes seems to be posing for portraits. I assume that it is the same crow that is visiting from day to day, but haven’t been able to figure out any real distinguishing marks yet to be sure. No other crows appear willing to remain near feeders if I go outside, though, so I guess it is always Casey who remains.

I enjoy Casey’s visits but am glad now that the robin pair decided not to re-use their nest on the downspout from last year. Though there wasn’t much room for Casey to perch, I did see her/him fly to that nest and examine it, obviously investigating if there were some nestlings there to serve as a meal. I was quite happy there weren’t any in residence!

I don’t know how much longer Casey will be a regular visitor but it will be interesting to learn more about his/her likes and dislikes as time goes by!

 

Birds braving winter

It’s not unheard to have snow in central North Carolina, but it also isn’t what you’d call a commonplace occurrence. It is a BIG deal when it snows here; if a couple inches of snow or some icing on the roads is expected, schools and businesses close. This is a cause of hilarity among people who originated from points north, but when they realize that many drivers here are not accustomed to winter-weather driving and that the Department of Transportation and towns are not equipped so well to deal with the conditions, they also will often stay inside and not go out on the road.

When we had two days of snow and ice storms last week, it wasn’t only people who were unhappy. The birds also didn’t seem enamored with the climate change, like the American goldfinch up above (Spinus tristis). They had had a taste of snow at the end of January, but it wasn’t such a strong storm then.  The Carolina chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) was scurrying about looking for food under the snow and the American robin (Turdus migratorius) was enjoying some berries.  The February storm was a bit different though

On the first day, when it didn’t snow heavily all at once (it was more a matter of lightly falling snow much of the day), I had a multitude of birds at my feeders – including some that I don’t usually see there. This mourning dove (Zenaida macroura), for example, didn’t scrounge around on the ground in the snow but landed on a feeder to see if there were seeds there.

Other birds flew back and forth between the trees and feeders, like the yellow-rumped warblers (Setophaga coronata), who weren’t always happy to have others sharing the feeders), and the tufted titmice (Baeolophus bicolor).

When out walking in a furious flurry of fat snowflakes, I ran into a neighbor who does research on bird survival. I mentioned that on the first day of the storm, I had a multitude of birds at my feeders (probably a 100 or so) but now, with this heavier snowfall, not a bird was to be seen. He noted that, given bird’s short lifespans in some cases and the fact that many would be younger, they were likely hunkering down as this was their first encounter with these weather conditions.

Another neighbor down the road and I kept our feeders filled so that our avian friends could rev up their energy stores, like the brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) and the Northern cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis). The birds did their part by fluffing up their feathers to help keep body warmth as much as possible.  And they posed for some nice photos – albeit not with enthusiastic expressions, like this warbler and Northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos).

Today, they should all be happy though – we’re expecting temperatures well in the upper 60s F! That should make for happy white-throated sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis), Eastern towhees (Pipilo erythrophthalmus) and all the other birds visiting my yard!

Squirrels love fruit!

As you may know, our furry, agile, smart little friends, the Eastern gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis), are fond of all kinds of vegetable matter. Acorns, nuts and seed are a favorite: they will chew through the screen of a backyard porch to get to bird seed (as my neighbors learned after leaving a bag of it there), chew through the plastic lids of food buckets in which I was keeping bird seed outside (the seed is now kept indoors) and spend lots of time contemplating how they can overcome baffles and other barriers designed to keep them off bird feeders.

At my house, they are somewhat lucky since I also put some seed under feeders for the ground-feeding birds such as dark-eyed juncos, white-throated sparrows, mourning doves, Eastern towhees and sometimes Northern cardinals and blue jays. The squirrels will amiably scurry about beside the birds to consume some sunflower seeds or millet. I also give the squirrels a treat now and then by putting out fruit bought from the reduced-produce rack at the supermarket, where I can buy veggies that the supermarket would otherwise throw away.

Apples are a common treat and the squirrels often eat those on the spot, although they may feel a need to carry away their meal to enjoy it at some distance from their family members. Blueberries and plums are nice, too.

The squirrels’ tastes in fruit have surprised me on occasion though. After learning that banana peels mushed up at the base of azaleas will help their growth and blooming, I took to putting overripe bananas by those plants. Sometimes, when checking the next day, I would find the peels someplace else in the yard and then realized that squirrels enjoy a tasty banana now and then. When I put out oranges in an attempt to attract orioles, the citrus didn’t last long once the resident tree rodents discovered them.

Squirrels will hoard food for later consumption, hiding the fruits of their labor in numerous spots around their territory. According to Wikipedia, each squirrel will make several thousand such caches every season! If they think they are being watched, they will also pretend to bury food in a cache, while actually hiding the morsel in their mouth to bury it someplace else later. Clever indeed!

Eastern gray squirrel IMG_8965©Maria de BruynI must admit, though, that I had not expected to see a squirrel assiduously burying grapes one day. Researchers have found that that they will eat the most perishable acorns right away, while caching those that will stay preserved the best. So what made this squirrel think that the grapes she was burying would last underground? Unless this was one sneaky squirrel who was just temporarily hiding her/his bounty until s/he could enjoy those grapes in relative solitude.

I’m looking forward to spring when I can sit outside to watch the squirrels ‘ behavior some more; the yard can be a real learning lab!
